Vernon is a keen and experienced cyclist who, on average, cycles at least 200 miles per week.

He was involved in an accident whilst cycling along the A650 Bingley Road in Shipley.

Vernon was riding his carbon fibre road racing bike and wearing a helmet. He was travelling at a safe speed along the A650 just before 3.00 pm on 21 November 2012.

Suddenly, to his horror, a car turned left into his path giving him no chance of avoiding a collision. His face struck the passenger side of the car and he fell from his bicycle landing heavily on his right side.

Naturally, Vernon was very shocked by what had happened. His face and mouth were immediately swollen and his right shoulder, chest and right hip were painful.

The police attended the scene and Vernon was taken by ambulance to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Liability for the accident was admitted by the driver.

Vernon was treated for his injuries in hospital and thankfully there were no significant physical injuries that caused him to be detained.

Treatment was also received from his dentist as a result of the injuries to his teeth.

Vernon sustained the following injuries:-

• Soft tissue injuries to his right hip, right elbow, thoracic spine, right shoulder, right wrist and coccyx
• A broken nose
• Fractured front teeth
• Headaches

The injuries caused Vernon to be virtually housebound for 2 weeks and initially he was in a lot of pain.

Medical evidence in support of the claim was obtained from a Consultant in Accident & Emergency Medicine and also a Dental Surgeon. The dentist was able to provide evidence as to the cost of future treatment of the fractured teeth which was essential in valuing the claim.

Vernon was concerned about his bicycle. It was an expensive road bike which was seriously damaged in the accident.

Evidence was obtained from a specialist engineer. This element of the claim was settled promptly in the sum of £2,550 and this was sent to Vernon by way of an interim payment.

The claim proceeded and further evidence was obtained in support of the injuries and losses. After tough negotiations the claim was settled in the sum of £13,000 in addition to the interim payment received for the bicycle.

Vernon was very pleased with the overall result and was very happy with the service he received.
